I've decided to start getting back into 40k again. I figure my bizarre pattern of points of big spending followed by long lulls of nothingness is handy for the game; buy the army then sit back and build, paint and game for months in between, good stuff. This time, I'm gonna go Tau cos MAN do I love the fyapowa! Course in the mean time, I'm gonna need some crash course games as the last time I played it was 2nd edition and I was 12.

A box of soldiers can cost up to $300
Paints cost $28 a pot and you'll need 6 to 8 to start
I don't know about tau points but generally you'll needed to buy about $1500 worth of stuff just to have 500 points worth of soldiers. And then you need to paint it.

Starting at the end of August, I make half decent monthly salary but the beauty of my living arrangement is that the income is pretty much 100% disposable. I'm in no rush, I plan to creep forward building up a force one(ish) box at a time, it could well take me over a year to build up an army, so between the two, the finances will not be too dissimilar to my current airsofting pattern. I know how much cash, effort and time the hobby sucks up, I used to have a 2000 point Ultramarine army (plus extras). I'll still airsoft when I can but it can be months between games with my scedule and of course it only applies to weekends when I tend to have plans anyway. I work from home mostly on standbye all week so as I'm pretty much chained to the locale most of the time twiddiling my thumbs, WH is a fun and handy way to keep me occupied at home. The modeling and painting can consume alot of time, which is handy and fun. You see, I need to find something other then PC gaming to occupy myself as I spend my work time on a computer thus I want to spend my downtime away from the screen. So, thus deciding not to build a gaming rig (at least not for now anyway), cutting back on the PC gaming and realising my current trend of less airsofting looks to be a long term phenomenon then spending there will be cut back too. Plus, in the long run, with a complete army the gaming itself is an economical day of fun. I can occasioanly get away from the house and when I do its better for me to spend one whole day out rather then a few shorter periods so the occasional day out for a game makes sense. All in all, I think it should work out fine. BTW, also I should mention, I have alot of fun just modeling and painting in itself so I have no innate rush to build a game-ready force. Also, as I have said, it's been a long time and a few editions since I last played so any new games will mostly be to the style of noob games anyway. So thusly, I won't be proper gaming for quite some time yet one way or another anyway.

Your declarations for your 5 year plan are fanscinating...what's your point? Because my point is that I'm trying to warn you, you'd better to willing to invest your 100% disposable income and commit, because since 1998, GW has stopped selling models that represent any sort of value for product. Everything is now focused at cost cutting to save on pennies and making you buy less for more. Example: I could buy 16 orks for $240 back in 2000, now I can only buy 10 for the same. There are shortcuts around this, but basically, it's going to become more expensive than airsoft, just without the nice second hand market to get out and get something back when you want. All just food for thought. Anyway, crash course... Go download or buy the rule book (especially if you have income) for the game and your race. The major differences are that rather than firing individual units at individual targets, squads fire at squads or designated targets. If you say one guy in Charlie squad fires at the tank, everyone has to fire at the tank. Even the bow and arrow guy (You don't have to bother with that roll though, just stops people from splitting fire and thereby wasting game time). Also everything moves in multiples of 6's rather than 4's. No more psychic phase, vehicle rules have completely changed yadda yadda yadda... But any major rules explanation would take up reams of text and yeah, I don't think anyone is going to retype 300-400 pages of pure text and pictures. You can get the books off rapidshare or megaupload easily. We're up to edition 5 now. Just swot up on the rules otherwise you'll drive your opponent insane. It'll also establish if you're willing to go through the process of collecting and playing.

Indeed, indeed, I'm a good 3 editions behind so I will have to get the new rulebook as well as the new Tau Empire Codex (is that out yet?) and probably Imperial Armour Volume 3: The Taros Campaign (for the new Tau battlesuits and vehicle stuff). I'll try rapidshare/megaupload, if it's as easy as you say, it will save me alot of time and effort. EDIT: On second thought, I might get hard copies of the books, they'll get alot of use so I suppose I don't mind having a decent copy of the basics around the house. ;D

Those two books together cost $700-800. That's alot of wasted money if you decide it's to much trouble in the end. Also when we play we borrow the store copy or share 1 that somebody already owns for reference sake. Basically there is a 60% chance you'll waste your money.

Yeah, you're probably right. I already know for sure that I'll take up playing again, but you are right in the abundance of refferences department, having a solid copy might turn out to be a big waste (cash better spent on a handful of battlesuits ). Yeh, I'll go hit up Ralph for info sources, thanks.

We're playing 40k size. Tell you what though, if you have access to ebay, you can buy and order stuff online for mega cheap. I'm going to try ask for any ex-players to sell their stuff through craigslist or gumtree...see if anything pops up. But if you or anyone can do ebay, let us know, we can order through you, with a little commission on top for the trouble, so long as it's cheaper than the freaking shop!

Yeh, if we hold off and compile a list for a while, maybe we can combine our orders try to oraganise one single shipment.
It'll be tricky to send to HK, but I'm sure alot of us have contacts in the US who could help us by relaying it here (I know someone myself as it happens).

Need...someone...with...free stuff! Tuesday night I may be participating in a 2000 point battle of tyranids vs ultramarines. This will be an experience! We have nothing but lascannons and multi-meltas to kill the big ones, and then assault cannons to chew up the little buggers. This is going to be insane! In the meantime, been playing more games, my Orks are getting more and more insane, I haven't won any of the last games but then I made some people smart, they paid for their victory in blood!!! haha! I don't mind if I lose, it's great fun to watch 7 burna boyz eat through 4 terminators in 1 turn. In order to win I need new units...can't wait for September 6 when I get 30+ new orks at $10 a peice, bargain! I found my spare wolf by the way, so you have has that Yon! In fact, anyone wanting to start a space marine or ork army should consider buying Black Reach, it's cheap, you get two armies, the rule book and the new space marine codex as well as other bitz and gubbinz. It's only $640 which is an incredible bargain. If you split it with a friend then it's $320!

If you look up / download / borrow the ork codex from ferox, they have a sort of psuedo ork langauge / alphabet in there. Should be a good place to start looking for ork symbols.
In case anyone can't figure out how to download the stuff, pm me what you want and I'll send you a current link.
Matt: I tried sending you links to stuff you wanted a while ago, but for some reason they kept bouncing / couldent get through.
"i have 6 + armys... of epic 40k... including sqats... titans and gargants but might be to ol school."
Yeah, epic 40k is too old school unfortunately. I've got some models, but I don't think I have anything army worthy. Also, Holy Shit, Squats. They are actually retconned, so they don't exist in modern fluff. Which makes the fact you have them even more awesome.
