I'm in MK, and I see places that have pellet rifles and pistols for sale. Guns like the Gamo Compact: www.pyramydair.com/p/gamo-compact-competition-air-pistol.shtml for example. Lets say they are shooting 7.9 gram target pellets at 520 ft/sec. That comes out to over 98 Joules. I was told the law in HK was anything over 2j was considered a firearm and is therefore illegal. Was I wrongly informed? I would love to get one of these target pistols for bullseye practice at home, but I don't want a police raid because of it. BTW, I know these aren't airsoft guns and are therefore off topic, but I wasn't sure where else to post this.

When I asked about them at the store, they said only for 'export' The police won't raid you for buying it. No problem with shooting in your own home. It's like owning combat knives (esp the auto folding ones). Also not legal but you can buy them and collect them.

under the "Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance" (HK Laws. Chap 238, not talking about section 5 in the UK)
states that:
"an air rifle, air gun or air pistol from which any shot, bullet or missile can be discharged with a muzzle energy greater than 2 joules (1.48 ft lbs)"
is considered 'arms' may it be gas powered, spring or anything that throws out a projectile.
Which, a permit is required for acquiring or possessing to satisfy the ordinance and stay legitimate carries a huge ass fine and a nasty sentence in jail.

I guess I won't be getting one then. Too much hassle. Thanks for your input.

Yep, anything 2j or over is legally a firearm and as such is flat out illegal without licensing and whatnot, even within your own home.
That said, overpowered pellet guns do exist in HK, they just mostly get along by skirting under the radar.
As it is illegal though, I seriously suggest that no Oclan member flaunts the law. At most, maybe having a 2-2.3j Airsoft gun you can probably fudge but higher then that, especially full blown pellet guns, not worth it.
It doesn't just give you a bad name, it sours it for the rest of us as well. For every person that gets in trouble with illegal air guns in HK, our beloved subculture takes another PR blow.
In particular, for those of you who might not have full HK citizenry rights, the absolute worst case scenario is that if you did get in trouble for possession of an illegal / unregistered firearm, you could get deported.
Super unlikely but considering you could never really use such a gun in HK anyway, its just not worth it imo.

I suppose the only way for guns to illegally get into HK, the easiest way, is by land.
Air and Sea no way, customs and excise are a tight filter and the marine boarder enforcement is hardcore.
But if your in the middle east with crate of AKs then simply loading it in a truck and driving from one country to the next will see a lesser degree of stop and search than by sea or air.
That said, there are SO many check points between the less strict countries and HK (not least o which is the Peoples "Big Brother" Republic of China) that getting a gun into HK illegally is such a long, arduous and risky process that it just isn't isn't worth it in HK considering how low gun crime is here. Hell, violent crime at all for that matter.
