If we were to go back to the 80's a lot of us would be restricted to only a few of the wonders of technology we would have today. Back then mobile phones are considered as bricks and the television as the box, as for the computer we were only able to write up documents and information which then we would have to print out and fax it to where ever the document needed to be faxed to, and maybe a short game of pong.
Lets go to the 90's, where most of us were born, phones gotten smaller but still to big for our pockets especially for that stupid antenna sticking out, pretty much stabbing us every time we walk, if you put it in your pocket. Television gotten smaller as well...still looks like a box though. Well at least you can do more things on a computer right, expect for that weird creepy noise it would make when trying to connect to the internet. That thing was scary, gave me nightmares...Hm? That’s just me? Damnit. Anyway, games has become more complicated with graphics, instead of two sticks bouncing a ball back and forth... it was still kinda fun though
Now for today, we are able to do what ever you can do on a computer, on a mobile phone, e.g. (obviously) iPhone, Android, BB. We have applications on the phone we're we would keep ourselves entertained when waiting on someone being late to an meet up...Duthie... but not only we can play angry birds and kill green piggy on our mobile phones. We are able to make a payment, check the weather, check times and fares for the train, check the stock market and even catch butterflies for coupons where you can redeem at the local store (and of course many more that I can't be bothered to mention...).
“Gamification, Integrating game dynamics into your application, site, service, community, content or campaign, in order to drive participation.”
Nowadays, a lot of these applications are about the user experience, such as augmented reality where the technology of a camera merges the virtual world and the real world, iButterfly is one example. A lot of these applications are molded into some kind of game, to keep users entertained yet informed about the things that are going on around them. Applications nowadays are all about the users and how they are interacting with the technology.
As for computers there are more screens! Unlike back then where we are only limited to one screen which means that we are limited to doing one thing, maybe two. We can now multitask with ease, nowadays a lot of tech savvy people would have six screens, all doing different things. Not to mention that screens nowadays are thinner and crisper. It’s like, might as well just watch your favorite television shows on your computer, what? It’s pretty much the same thing, but better. Only difference is that your computer screen is probably 24” and your television screen is like 45”. But what does it matter anyway, we are now coming to a time where you can do a lot of the stuff you can do on your computer on the TV (stupid in my opinion, i would rather do those stuff on my computer), and for your computer you might end up not using your mouse that much, because we have touch screens. Also we are at the brink of doing one thing on your iPhone or whatever, and just flicking it to your TV, then flicking it back to your phone and back to your computer, crazy! It’s like something from a sci-fi movie. What’s going to happen next? Getting zapped into the computer like in Tron? I hope that happens… that would be awesome lol.
However, what has all these technology made us into? Remember how our grandmas would tell us that we shouldn’t watch too much TV because it’ll melt our brains or something along the lines. To us it these technology has made it convenient to us and our lives easier then we were little, maybe it had made some of us less social, but to a lot of us, it may have not made too much of a difference to our social life. But, what about the kids that are born in the 2000’s, with all of these technology readily available for them? Have they become the brain dead zombies that our grandmothers told us for watching too much TV? Where is technology going? Where is it taking us? What will become of us in the future? And what will become of our children? Will the technology of today bring us to new heights, and create new wonders? Or will we become so relented of it that it’ll destroy us from within?
Thanks for your time and feedback
