Just a thought from personal experience.
I remember in DEN Trinity shop, the store assistant was telling a western guy who asked him "Do I need a silencer?"
Answer was "No no~! It does not make a difference! Only for looks!"
X amount of (seconds...) time, days, weeks, months, years after.... Here I am still thinking "It does make a difference!!"
Besides the gearbox noise, AEGs are generally quiet unless you are indoors or nearby. Gear noise cannot be stopped much (unless you got an AUG and stuffed foam around the gearbox).
But also, guns without silencers attached and of higher power emit louder muzzle noise. Those with silences dampen the signature noise.
Hands up those who have homed into enemies because of gun signature noises (I can recognise Con's and FC's gun noise).
Hands up those who have heard gun shots but could not home into them.

I'm sure we all know that:
Automatic fire creates the most noise gives away your position easiest while single fire is stealthier and much harder for others to determine trajectory and recognise a single gun shot.
At the 17th June wargame at Armed Forces, I shot Xurbiton 2-3 meters away with my suppressor attached AUG. 2 other enemy players were within 1 meter away behind a doorway right beside me.
The door way would have blocked the sound a bit, but with single fire Xurbit was shot out and the 2 enemies did not hear any signs of the shot.
If I used a pistol or an unsuppressed rifle, I believe my location would surely have been compromised.

Gas guns are the easiest to silence and a silencer creates a great difference.
My Marushin M500 gas shotgun creates a big CRACK everytime I fire. However with my custom made silencer (using a gearbox spring and wrapping it with TISSUE PAPER) the noise is reduced to such a level you only hear a dull "duff" and the click of your trigger (then later you see the gas stream up from the end of the silencer).
Also tested on a GBB, the muzzle noise is drastically reduced but the slide cycling noise cannot be helped, but such noise is directed sideways and backwards so the target would not be able to hear it unless echoed in doors.

Personally...
I'd always carry a silenced weapon for my main or sidearm. Purely for looks (as some guns look awesome with one while others don't) and the extra advantage in stealth
I would hate it if I shot someone and because my gun created a loud enough noise that it alerted nearby enemies of my position... and especially when I am carrying a semi-auto MSG90 and just an unsuppressed pistol... Screwed I would be.

- So, do silencers make a difference? Yes.
- Enough to improve your game? That depends on you. A silencer won't do much if you're rushing clearly insight or making unnecessary noise while moving.
- Is a silencer worth it the money? If you HAVE the money to afford it, yes!
- Is it VERY important to have one? No. We can all do without because REGARDLESS you will shoot the enemy and kill him, with or without a silencer. Period. ;D
