Common radios operate in two bands of frequencies:
UHF (400-450 MHz)
VHF (100-150 MHz)
Note 1: We use UHF.
Motorola talk about two-way radios come in both UHF and VHF. In this guide the UHF model will be used.
Note 2: Motorola UHF channels all start with 409.xxxx MHz.
Other brand of radios with a key panel and LCD screen allows you to input your own frequency in. These kinds of radios will be used in this guide.
Note 3: Known good models are Quansheng, Linton, Weierei, Yaesu.
Most radios have a max broadcast/pickup range of 3-5 miles over flat ground which is like 3 football fields but not across the harbor.

Transmission/speaking:
---
Radios can only transmit or recieve and not both at the same time. So if you are speaking, you will not be hearing anyone speaking at the same time.
There are two types of transmission types:
1) PTT - Push To Talk
2) VOX - Continuous talking handsfree - some headsets/handsets can detect voice and transmit automatically.
Note 4: Please use PTT for wargame. VOX almost never stops transmitting allowing no one to speak.

Frequency Stepping: For LCD panel radios
---
This function is to set the frequnecy value that is incremented/decremented when you are changing frequnecies (by pressing UP or DOWN).
Buttons pressed:
1)SET
2) 4
Repeated to change STEP values.
STEP values are: 5, 10, 12.5, 25
---
CTCSS - encryption. All radios.
---
This function lets the radio use sub-frequencies to define channels.
On both LCD panel and motorola radios the abbreviation is labeled as:
'QT'
How this works:
Radios with QT in sub-channels can only listen to those also transmitting with the same QT frequency.
Radios without QT can listen to all transmissions, even from those transmitted with QT. This is commonly known as the lobby channel.
How to turn on/off QT:
Motorola:
Press menu repeatedly until you come to "QT" on the screen and press up/down to select "Y" for YES. You will now see 'QT' on your LCD screen.
Quansheng Radio/Other radios: Key sequence may be different.
1) SET
2) 2 (Label: T.SQ)
Now QT will show up on your screen.
How to set QT frequency:
1) SET
2) 3 (label: Tone)
3) Press A or B (Label: UP/DOWN) to adjust QT values.
Note: Jing Tong users please check manual - it is a bit different.

Because Motorola radios do not show frequency numbers, a list of motorola channel frequencies are up as well as the QT/Motorola sub-channel frequencies.
