Or the "OCD Club" ( ) currently informaly consists of Magiaz, Malavern, Arclight and maybe Ferox (and others) if they wish to join our old school pen and paper D20 fun. We have begin talking amongst us about getting a game started; Magiaz was saying how he'd like to wait for Ferox before we start playing but Malavern and I think we shoudl just go ahead and play, others can always just jump in later on, no biggie. Right now, I'm conceptualising what character I'd like to do. Both involved custom races and classes but they should be well balanced and interesting so it should work fine. One is a "bushido blade" rogue/traveller who's all about the katana + wakizashi + tanto use combined with unconventional acroabatics. If you've seen samurai champloo, you only need to check out that crazy mofo in the 'fro to know what I'm talking about. True neutral, drinking and smoking problem; race and class are all about speed and strength, no ability for any other armor or weapons or magic. The other, which I haven't mentioned before now, is a "Keeper" of the "Alterran" people; a planetouched species most comparable to Aasimer although different in their own way. Keepers are sort of this mix of Paladin and Monk, with the Paladin philosophy of smiting the wicked and classic full plate armour but using the monks flavour of hand-to-hand to lay down the hurt, also a splash of red dragon disciple in terms of significant ability bonuses as the levels progress. Keepers are lawful good, and their combat philosophy is zen in it's simplicity; the fists do the hurting, the magic makes the fists stronger. There is some magical healing ability but it is a racial trait that never really levels up all that much. In any case, these will need much discussion between Magiaz and myself to get tweaked out for reasonable use in a game; I've delebertly kept the concepts fairly simple with a view that most ideas and creations aren't so much scratch-built as inspired from existing classes and races so that results will essentialy be modified from existing exaples of abilities and whatnot so that we don't have to kill our brains trying to create whole new skill trees for a whole new class. Right now, I'm leaning more in the Keepers directions as the bushido dude will liekly be used in my free form forum pbp RP. When it comes to the D&D game, methinks the Keeper is better anyway, I think I could do a lawful good meatshield. Magiaz, as he has mentioned before, will just pick whatever class he feels is best to compliment the group. I don't know what Malavern wants to do yet though, he's doesn't seam to have decided. In any case, this thread is here so we can discuss and log said discussion right here so that we can mention, suggests and brainstorm in trickle-charge style so we can get at least some discussion done when not in person. Of course I think our in person discussions rock in terms of practicality, but in between sessions, this could be handy to.

lol Yeah, AOL is development is slow with this D&D thing hovering around; just as well really, as I can use the D&D experience to enhance the RP if possible. ;D At the momment the race descriptions are only rough, but yeah, i'll see what I can do about getting rough ideas down in writing as soon as I've got them. if you REALLY want, a quicker way round, catch me on MSN and I can give you my fluidic-ideas, that way you can at least start to think about it before anything is even posted, would save you a little time I suppose, also allows you some creative feedback as i'm still developing the Furions and Wildkin so if you catch me earlier in the design proccess, you just may to get to sway some things your way. And sure Riot, you're welcome to our D&D old school, I'm not so sure if it's Dingo's cup of tea though. Due to the rather "intense" social nature of the game, methinks we'll have to put new applicants to the vote within our club, to make sure everyone is willing to take on the particular player in question, as everyone in the club has to "put up with" every player, I think unanimous applicant approvals is only fair.

We dont want half-assed players like you, who cant even respect the next player enough to read their entire post! ====================================== as to which Vers, not really sure, its all up to Ralph. Though 4.0 is a bit... nerfed. ====================================== As to my class, I'm going pure archer as an Elf , with noting but archery skills. Like we discussed that evening in McDs... Okay, lot to say about this.
"mix of Paladin and Monk" w/ magic
They are called Sacred Fists. Also, your not supposed to let other players know your alignment. To give an example why, If your a chaotic evil rogue who's pretending to be a paladin, and stealing / killing when eyes are turned, having the other players know your true alignment kind of ruins it.
Being perfectly honest, I was hoping to not have a thread about this on O for a number of reasons.
The key to a good DND game is to to try and gather players who play for simliar reasons. For example, me and Matt have spent many hours together discussing through his character idea's / concepts, and he has put alot of effort into it. In some games with ferox, he technically killed 3 player characters within 2 sessions, or something there about. I kept the PCs alive using Deus ex Machina since I didn't want them to spend the whole game filling in and making character sheets instead of playing. Most of the sessions were spent with the players largely ganking each other over, and it was all in all pretty loose and fun was had, which is all that ultimately matters.
If Matt spent 3-4 hours developing a fleshed out and well designed character, just to die within the first 2 minutes of the story because another player was in the mood for mucking about with a character he made in 3 minutes, it would, all in all, suck for him.
That is to say, different people play for different reasons, and sometimes those reasons are directly conflicting.
Also, since I think its assumed I'm DMing, I'd like to say that DMing takes alot of preparation and effort, and that as a DM its my responsibilty above anything else to make sure all the players are having fun (it's everyone's job, but mine moreso). If I have to cater to needs of someone who wants to kill stuff, someone who wants a deep cloak and dagger story, someone who wants to gain in power notably by the end of each session, someone who wants to develop a deep character... The more different things I have to try and cram into each session, the harder it gets for me, and the less satisfaction each player gets. Therefore, I want interests to overlap as much as possible.
In any case, the main thing I was considering was to create two groups. One for a low level, much more relaxed style of play, simple characters / plot, where people can just generally dick around as much as they like, without things getting too serious.
For the second group, It will be more serious, and aimed more towards the MG players. Since your used to a system that generally has no character restraints or 'power limit', your more used to creating exotic characters with custom abilities limited only by your imagination. Thus, the game will start at much higher levels, and will cater towards house ruled, custom created stuff. Alternatively, we could not use a system per say, but thats a discussion for another time.
The other advantage of this is that it allows me to seperate people who don't like each other, since personal conflict is a common game ruiner.
For the first group, I'm thinking Ferox, FC (UC), Malavern.
For the second, I'm thinking, Matt, Riot, Billy (UC).
People could technically attend both, but I'd rather keep thing under control for now. Mostly for reasons of social politics at any rate.
Riot is welcome, obviously, but Matt please don't invite at will, since as DM I'm the poor bastard who has to spend hours trying to figure out how to make the game fun for them. I've had games spoiled somewhat by unknown random people turning up before.
I kind of wish this thread hadn't been created, since I don't think it will be possible to include everyone, and some people are probably going to be excluded, which will suck for them. Also its hard to know what to do with dingo and dark (if you want to join?) since I don't know them so well.
To FC: We are probably looking at one session a week, each session lasting about 3-5 hours+. Preferably the same time each week, though it'll be probably end up being mobile or maybe missing a week occasionally based on people's schedules. We need about 3-5 players (excluding DM). It can be done with less, but its not really a 'proper' DND session otherwise. More than that and things get difficult to control.
To Dark: I've got 1st ed AD&D, 2nd ed AD&D, 3.5th ed AD&D in book form, and then I've got the original DND and 4th ed ADND in .pdf form. I'm lacking monster manuals but I prefer to stat that stuff myself anyway. I'm very familiar with 2nd and 3rd, if we do 4th I'll need to do alot of reading. Some of books are currently out of the country, but I can get copies ala internet.
To Mala: It's not that 4th is nerfed, just all the old timers hate it because its much more simplified, so that Wizards of the coast can reach a wider market base in the casual gamer audience, at the cost of making the game 'shallower' so to speak. tl;dr elitism.

I did say we'd leave it to a club decision. And yeh, I'd want to do both games; I'd have a different character for each. I think it's only fair we give players to join either or both games, though obviously not with the same character. And okay, if you want to end the convo here thats fine, I jsut thought that this would be a useful thread as a number of people have simply had no input so far because they just don't have the same freedom time wise as we do. But yeh, plan and structure as you wish, just try to give people options.

Well it doesn't make much difference now, we'll see how things go from here.
Once I've gotten everyone used to RPing face to face, might try and work on an MGS4 setting with the PCs as a foxhound group, hunting around and investigating private military groups. Would be awesome.
Sorry if I'm being pushy, I just want people to enjoy their first dnd session, and trying to avoid common pitfalls.

i was hoping to RP with Arclight, as he seems to create more fluidity than if i were to play with others. I'll probably be more serious with my char too.
But then again, you know me best.

Arclight will probably be in both groups, and I think you will be as well. Its a recommendation more than anything set in stone.
